The PE Uniform

During physical education class, students are expected to dress in appropriate attire designed for physical activity. This required uniform is a part of each student’s grade in class. It is an easy grade to earn. Disregarding it can result not only in diminished grades, but disciplinary action involving the school dean and parents.

During middle school years, students’ bodies undergo many changes, one of which is the production of body-sweat. It is polite that young people clean and change their clothing regularly, and present a socially acceptable standard of hygiene. Students should not wear their academic uniform during physical activities, less the resulting body odor offend teachers and classmates.

During physical education, students spend a fair amount of time on the ground. The academic uniform is not suitable for this activity and will easily get soiled or torn. The PE uniform is designed to prevent this.

What Is the Uniform?
The accepted shirt is a white, Virgil PE T-shirt. It has a grey circle with a red tiger in the center and says, “Virgil Physical Education”. Plain white, shirts are not permitted. For families that have financial difficulties, please contact the boys’ PE office directly.

The accepted shorts are red in color, and say, “Virgil Physical Education” along the leg.

Name
Students are required to write their first- and last-names on their clothing. This will allow students to locate an item from the lost and found certain that it is their clothing.

  • Shirt: The name is to be on the left chest of the shirt, in a red, outlined box.
  • Shorts: The name is to be written on the right thigh of the shorts.

Initials or nick-names are not permitted. Teachers will help students that have not completed this requirement.

Multiple Shirts
Students may only wear one white, muscle-shirt under their PE shirt. Layers of clothing, especially in warmer weather, pose a health-risk to students, encourage disobedience to class and societal standards, and are a poor hygienic choice.

Multiple Shorts
For the same reasons as above, multiple shorts are also not allowed.

Where To Get Uniforms
Students can get the PE uniform at the Virgil student store. The cost is $6 for the shirt, and $9 for the shorts.

For students with financial concerns, used uniforms are available at the boy’s PE office. Shirts and shorts are $1 each. Supplies may be limited.

Cold Weather
When the official temperature is less than 70-degrees Fahrenheit, students may wear red sweat-pants and/or a red, white, or grey sweat-shirt.

  • Hoods on the sweat-shirts are not permitted.
  • Logos and secondary colors are not permitted.

The PE uniform is still required to be worn under the sweat-shirt or sweat-pant.

Hot Weather
Students are encouraged to bring a small hand-sized towel to PE class and keep it in their locker. During warmer weather, students may sit or conduct exercise on this towel, aiding against the hot black-top.
