American Education at Its Finest
on June 26, 2010 at 6:35 amA county supervisor talks about how the Arizona law against illegal immigration is a bad idea because Arizona doesn’t share a border with Mexico. Democrat County Supervisor Peggy West of Milwaukee, serving her 2nd term, during a debate on a measure boycotting the state of Arizona she asserts an uneasy knowledge of US geography.
Here’s some good quotes:
If this was Texas, which is a state <giggle> that’s directly on the border with Mexico… but this is a state that is a ways removed from the border.
And because it’s on the internet, it must be true (I think that’s where she was going with this, I think):
And it doesn’t make sense to me that when you Google this subject, and you put in “Arizona SB1070” that you see a picture of the governor of Arizona meeting with President Obama in May of 2010…
??? Yeah, that’s what I said.
The real shame in this video is:
- Ms. West is an elected official (twice!);
- She was actually participating in a debate about boycotting Arizona over SB1070! This is a major decision with potentially severe repercussions and she doesn’t even know the basics?!
- This is blatant evidence of how so many people dumbly listen to the language/talking points of their ideological leaders without investigating and understanding the issue for themselves.
- After all, Obama, Pelosi, and Reid hadn’t even read the short law before publicly condemning it!
Now more importantly, since this story has taken on a huge internet life of its own, is that Ms. West said she would rethink the issue if Arizona did indeed share a border with Mexico, like Texas does. So far, in my (very) limited research of Milwaukee’s esteemed press corps, I haven’t found any journalists who have asked her–or commented–if she has rethought her position. Well, Ms. West: have you? Apparently, she’ll be addressing this issue on a local cable station in Milwaukee Sunday night. I’ll have to see if I can find any reporting on it.
Here’s the video…
